Cedar Falls, Hocking Hills State Park, Hocking County, Ohio, USA

Navigating the moss-slick rocks and rain-swollen creeks of Hocking Hills, a solitary eastern box turtle pauses along a fluid ribbon of water fed by a cascading sandstone waterfall. Adorned with a highly domed, dark carapace etched in brilliant radiate bursts of yellow and orange, this terrestrial reptile blends flawlessly into the damp forest floor. Though primarily land-dwellers, box turtles frequently seek out shallow aquatic refugia during the transitioning seasons to hydrate, forage for macroinvertebrates, or escape fluctuating temperatures. Protected by a specialized, hinged plastron that allows it to completely seal its shell against predators, this ancient lineage serves as a testament to biological endurance within Ohio's heavily forested, moisture-rich canyon ecosystems.
