Picture of the Day
A small, light-furred Japanese pika peeks out from a deep drift of fresh white snow, perfectly framed by the snow-covered, twisted branches of a dwarf stone pine tree. Out-of-focus snowy evergreen pine needles softly blur the foreground and background, focusing attention on the animal's alert eyes and round ears in its winter environment.Dominant SubjectA Japanese Pika (Ochotona hyperborea yesoensis) sheltering within a snow-laden dwarf Japanese Stone Pine (Pinus pumila).DescriptionAs the punishing Siberian winds lock the northern island of Hokkaido into a months-long frozen embrace, a master of winter endurance watches from a fortress of ice and pine. Peeking cautiously from a deep, immaculate blanket of fresh snow, a Japanese pika finds refuge within the natural, twisting frame of a sub-alpine stone pine's branches. Unlike many other small mountain mammals, this resilient ice-age survivor does not hibernate; instead, it relies on these snow-covered evergreen sanctuaries to insulate it from temperatures that plunge far below zero. Sheltered beneath the heavy, white-laden boughs, the tiny naki-usagi utilizes a complex network of hidden tunnels beneath the snow crust to access its meticulously gathered summer hay piles, illustrating a delicate and extraordinary strategy for surviving the absolute peak of Japan's wild winter. If you'd like to continue exploring this sub-zero ecosystem, let me know if you want to look into:How the subnivean zone (the space between the snow and the ground) protects small animals from freezingThe unique physiology that allows pikas to stay warm without hibernatingPhotographic tips for correcting exposure when shooting small, light subjects against bright, high-contrast snow
