Stalker of the Shadows

Melting into the frosted topography of the high-elevation backcountry, an adult mountain lion (Puma concolor) stays low to the frozen earth, scanning the quiet winter woods of Yosemite National Park. Clad in a dense, weather-hardened coat that perfectly mimics the dead grasses and granite shadows of the Sierra Nevada, the big cat uses a screen of pine needles dusted with rime ice to conceal its powerful frame. Its brilliant, piercing eyes track the movement of potential prey with absolute focus, capturing the patient, calculating strategy that makes this apex predator a master of the hunt. In an ecosystem increasingly squeezed by human encroachment, this secretive, solitary cat represents the enduring, wild heart of California's protected wilderness, moving like a ghost through a landscape locked in winter's grip.
