As dawn breaks over the high-altitude karst plateau of Italy's Apennine Mountains, a spectacular symphony of light and atmospheric moisture transforms the landscape into a living canvas. The vast plains and surrounding ridges of the Monti Sibillini range capture pooling night air, giving rise to thick ribbons of valley fog that snake through the depressions like slow-moving glacial rivers. Bathed in the warm, raking rays of a low-slung sun, the velvety, sheep-grazed slopes illuminate in alternating bands of brilliant gold and rich, deep shadow.
