Crimson Amidst the Clouds

Perched gracefully upon a moss-etched branch, a striking male pine grosbeak (Pinicola enucleator) brings a brilliant splash of raspberry red to a misty mountain overlook. Surrounded by clusters of ripening wild hawthorn berries, this robust, heavy-billed finch pauses as soft layers of morning fog drift through the valleys far below. These boreal songbirds rely on their specialized, crushing mandibles to extract seeds and strip fruit, moving into high-altitude ridges and dense coniferous woodlands across temperate North America during their seasonal feeding migrations.
