The High-Altitude Vigil
Across the soaring volcanic plateaus of East Africa, a drama of survival unfolds daily in the thin mountain air. Here, far above the sun-baked plains, a vast rolling grassland meets the edge of the sky. Standing together on this windswept ridge is a pair of graceful wanderers.
A magnificent male Thompson's gazelle and his companion. His sweeping, heavily ridged horns form a striking crown, while their warm, fawn-and-white coats catch the golden fragments of breaking sunlight. They stand flanked by ancient, umbrella-topped montane trees, whose gnarled branches are sculpted by generations of fierce highland winds.
As heavy, dark storm clouds threaten to swallow the distant valleys, the pair remains perfectly motionless. With large, sensitive ears twitching to capture the subtlest sounds, they scan the alpine meadows. In this wide-open wilderness, their collective vigilance is their ultimate defense against the unseen.
