As the expansive lake basin freezes over, heavy winter snow and wind-driven ice accumulation blanket the tiered, horizontal sedimentary shelves and vertical cliff faces. Freeze-thaw cycles exploit minor joints and bedding planes in the rock, causing frost wedging that gradually shapes these recessed coastal shelves. Anchored precariously in the shallow, snow-covered soils above the cliffs, cold-hardy gymnosperms and deciduous species endure extreme thermal stress, their roots gripping the weathered stone as a dense fog rolls off the frozen ice sheet, drastically reducing visibility across the littoral zone.
