Spire of the Forest

Rising like elegant, shingled columns from a vibrant cushion of moss, a cluster of parasol mushrooms claims a decaying hardwood log on the damp floor of the New Forest. These grand fungi represent the spectacular fruiting bodies of a massive subterranean mycelial network that quietly acts as the primary decomposer of the ancient British woodlands. Covered in distinct, brownish scales that break apart into concentric rings as the cap expands, the mature specimen uncurls to shelter a delicate, ringed stipe. Bathed in the soft, fragmented light of a mature woodland canopy, this micro-community thrives in the high-humidity pockets created by rotting timber, turning the silent decay of the forest floor into a striking, multi-tiered sanctuary of primordial life.
