Sunset Over the Citadel

As the first rays of dawn pierce the horizon, a magnificent Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep ram welcomes the morning from a windswept granite balcony high in the backcountry of Yosemite National Park. Resting comfortably on the coarse stone, the ram dominates the frame, its massive, deeply grooved spiraled horns catching the intense, golden backlight of the rising sun. Below its high-altitude perch, an expansive wilderness of glacially carved valleys, dark pine forests, and alpine lakes slowly awakens under a sky painted in soft hues of amber and violet. This intimate wide-angle perspective captures not just the raw power of an endangered mountaineer, but its complete harmony with a vast, protected ecosystem—a living symbol of resilience reigning over the iconic, untamed crest of California’s High Sierra.
