Strut in the Shadows

Deep within a moisture-wicking gorge carved out over eons, a male wild turkey displays his full, barred tail feathers as he stalks across a rich floor of copper-colored leaves. The true scale of this untamed landscape unfolds behind him, where towering walls of ancient Black Hand Sandstone rise like chiseled monuments out of the Appalachian earth. Flanked by massive, moss-gripped roots and delicate golden canopies that catch the fading autumn light, the bird walks with an unmistakable, regal confidence through the damp hollow. This hidden theater of stone and shadow serves as a perfect sanctuary, offering the ideal blend of dense cover and forage where Ohio’s most iconic woodland bird can rule its primeval domain undisturbed.
