Gaze of the High Sierra

Basking in the golden warmth of late afternoon light, a young Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep ram locks its amber, horizontal-pupiled eyes onto the lens, presenting a face of quiet resilience high in Yosemite National Park. Resting quietly amidst a scattered herd on a rugged granite outcrop, the ram's dense coat and sharply ridged, curving horns are beautifully defined against the softly blurred silhouettes of its companions. Decimated over a century ago by disease and overhunting, these specialized mountaineers have steadily reclaimed their perilous high-altitude strongholds across the Sierra Nevada crest. This intimate portrait reveals the individual majestic character behind one of the American West’s most grueling wildlife restoration successes, capturing a rare moment of stillness in an unforgiving, wind-scoured wilderness.
