Sentinels of the Shore

Peering out through a vibrant screen of paper birch trees on the cliffs of the Bayfield Peninsula, the deep blue waters of Lake Superior expand outward to meet the distant horizon. In the foreground, clusters of iconic white trunks with peeling, papery bark frame the scene like natural windows, accented by a glowing understory of golden sugar maples and wild grasses. Across the undulating blue channels, the forested sandstone cliffs of the outlying islands sit bathed in a gentle afternoon light, their dense canopies packed with peak autumn color. The soft, puffy cloud banks rolling overhead cast shifting shadows across the vast freshwater sea, reinforcing the quiet grandeur of this wild northern archipelago.
